Boat Maintenance
Maintenance is an important responsibility for a boat owner and skipper of a vessel. Here we discuss hull and stuff onboard maintenance.
1. Hull Inspection and Maintenance
Exterior Inspection
- Monthly: Inspect the hull for cracks, blisters, or damage, particularly around stress points like the keel, bow, and stern.
- Annually: Haul the boat out of the water for a thorough inspection and cleaning.
- Repairs: Address any signs of fiberglass damage, blistering, or cracking immediately to prevent further issues.
- Cleaning: Clean the hull regularly to remove algae, barnacles, and debris. Apply anti-fouling paint yearly or as recommended by the manufacturer.
Deck and Fittings
- Monthly: Check deck hardware (cleats, stanchions, etc.) for corrosion and secure fittings. Inspect caulking or seals for water intrusion.
- Annually: Test all through-hulls and fittings for leaks or wear, especially those below the waterline.
2. Bilge Pump System
- Before Each Trip: Test bilge pumps and automatic float switches to ensure they function properly.
- Monthly: Clean the bilge and remove debris that could clog the pump.
- Annually: Replace bilge pump filters if applicable and inspect wiring for corrosion.
3. Safety Gear and Systems
These are discussed in depth in the safety module 15
- Life Jackets and PFDs: Inspect all personal flotation devices for damage, wear, or mildew. Replace damaged units immediately.
- Fire Extinguishers: Check fire extinguisher charge levels monthly and replace or recharge if needed.
- Flares and Emergency Gear: Ensure all emergency equipment is up to date and functioning, such as flares, EPIRBs, and signaling devices.
- First Aid Kit: Restock the first aid kit annually or after use.
